A Perfect Mother by Miranda Smith is a highly recommended, soapy, domestic suspense novel following a social media mommy blogger.

Megan Thorne has made it. She has an impressive and profitable social media presence with her blog "The Years Are Short," and a best selling book. Her content features her and her adorable five year-old daughter, Stella, with her husband Ian preferring to stay in the background. She has two nannys/helpers, Sabrina and Tanner, and even a social media advisor, Eliza.

Imagine her shock when, during the media questions following her speaking at a conference, Sabrina stumbles into the room, blood on her face, and no Stella in sight. Apparently, while in the bathroom on the main floor of the conference center, Sabrina was injured and Stella was kidnapped. Katy Wang, head of security, looks at the cameras and they find the suspected perpetrator. Detective Olivia Ross is on the case with her team. Megan is left wondering how this can be happening to her.

There is plenty of tension and drama as the intricacies of the plot unfold. The narrative is presented from the point-of-view of Megan and the kidnapper in alternate chapters. As Megan is a self-absorbed, self-promoting lifestyle and mommy blogger, most readers should already be primed to have some dislike for her just on the amount of narcissism this requires. The kidnapper has her own agenda. There really isn't a lot of character development for anyone beyond the main characters, but don't expect any likable characters beyond Stella, Ian, and minor characters like Detective Ross.

As some basic background information is released, some plot points are predictable early on in the narrative. However, since the page count is low, the pages will fly by. Set disbelief aside, stay hydrated, and enjoy the soap opera-like disaster about to implode. This could also be a cautionary tale to keep the photos of your children private, and regulate your online profile to a minimum, especially if you have some hefty secrets to hide. The over-the-top ending is really something spectacularly enjoyable.

A Perfect Mother is a good choice for anyone looking for a short, fast-paced, entertaining soapy drama. Thanks to Bookouture for providing me with an advance reader's copy via NetGalley. My review is voluntary and expresses my honest opinion.

1. Try to understand what the author wished to do, and do not blame him for not achieving what he did not attempt.

2. Give him enough direct quotation--at least one extended passage--of the book's prose so the review's reader can form his own impression, can get his own taste.

3. Confirm your description of the book with quotation from the book, if only phrase-long, rather than proceeding by fuzzy precis.

4. Go easy on plot summary, and do not give away the ending.

5. If the book is judged deficient, cite a successful example along the same lines, from the author's oeuvre or elsewhere. Try to understand the failure. Sure it's his and not yours?

To these concrete five might be added a vaguer sixth, having to do with maintaining a chemical purity in the reaction between product and appraiser.....Review the book, not the reputation.... Better to praise and share than blame and ban. The communion between reviewer and his public is based upon the presumption of certain possible joys in reading, and all our discriminations should curve toward that end.
