Star Wars

Last night's movie night was Star Wars.

Now it's called episode IV, but to ME this is the first Star Wars, the original.

Movie Dude originally wanted to start a Planet of the Apes marathon, but we had weather issues which delayed the start of our movie night. Movie Dude and Just Me were both happy to share much Star Wars Trivia. It is disturbing how much trivia they know.

I was the only one in the room that didn't grow up from birth with Star Wars. Concerning the next generation: Be afraid; very afraid.

Ruth King said...: I originally saw this as a three-year-old (My uncle nicknamed me R2D2 because my first two initials are R's) but didn't see it again until I was eighteen. Imagine my surprise at the fact that R2D2 and C-3PO weren't the main characters! (Apparently they were the only ones my three-year-old mind rendered significant!); September 13, 2008 at 8:08 PM
Lori L said...: I think R2D2 and CP3O were considered main characters by children everywhere, LOL! Star Wars came out right after I graduated from high school so I knew life before Star Wars. On the other hand, I also knew life with the original Star Trek series.; September 14, 2008 at 11:49 AM

John Updike's six rules for reviewing:

1. Try to understand what the author wished to do, and do not blame him for not achieving what he did not attempt.

2. Give him enough direct quotation--at least one extended passage--of the book's prose so the review's reader can form his own impression, can get his own taste.

3. Confirm your description of the book with quotation from the book, if only phrase-long, rather than proceeding by fuzzy precis.

4. Go easy on plot summary, and do not give away the ending.

5. If the book is judged deficient, cite a successful example along the same lines, from the author's oeuvre or elsewhere. Try to understand the failure. Sure it's his and not yours?

To these concrete five might be added a vaguer sixth, having to do with maintaining a chemical purity in the reaction between product and appraiser.....Review the book, not the reputation.... Better to praise and share than blame and ban. The communion between reviewer and his public is based upon the presumption of certain possible joys in reading, and all our discriminations should curve toward that end.
